Visualization Exercise For Lockdown During Covid-19 | #STAYHOME
Last night the president announced a 21 day lockdown for South Africa. A hard, but necessary, decision for the safety and wellbeing of all.
Being stuck in our homes is hard for even the luckiest and most privileged of us. Some of us might not be having a hard time due to physical space like a garden, but because of the mental space we find ourselves in. Others may live in harsh and confined spaces, making this lockdown especially heavy to endure.
Cue the magic of visualization, the great escape if you will...something I believe we're all going to be in need of at some point in the next few weeks/months as this strange new life continues to unfold.
Visualization isn't rocket science, not in my opinion. You can think of it as using your imagination, day dreaming or fantasizing. You can do it sitting up, or lying down. You could do it with your eyes open, or eyes closed. The control here is in your hands, in your mind.
We may not be able to control all the crazy and unbearable things going on right now, but this is giving you some control back- even just for a snippet of the day, you get to choose where you'll go. Where your great escape from the anxiety, fear and sadness will be.
The options are endless:
You can pick your favorite places, your favorite memories, your favorite people.
You can pick somewhere you've never been, but always wanted to go.
You can pick a movie, or a series.
You can pick the ocean, the forest, the moon.
You can pick a color, a feeling, a smell.
You can pick whatever you want- you have the control.
Here's what we're gonna do:
Find your spot to sit/stand/lie down.
If you feel safe to do so, close your eyes. If you don't, softly focus your gaze onto something.
Take a deep breath in, let it out. Keep breathing, my love.
Imagine you are in a bubble, and say "I am safe and protected".
If you need grounding, imagine roots or anchors from the soles of your feet digging deep into the earth.
You are supported.
Have you chosen where you want to go, what you want to do, who you want to see?
Do it all. Your bubble is your safe space to let go, get creative, escape for a while.
You can stay as long as you want to.
When you're ready to come back, ground yourself, breathe in, bravely (or with tears) conquer the rest of the day.
We are all in this together.
